It was one of the earliest fulllength talkie films in India. This movie is also called one of the cinematic gems from the early days of Hindi cinema due to its high production values, cinematography and an upmarket subject at a time when most were low-budget exploitation films. "Prahar"’s success prompted Universal Pictures to contact Franz Osten for help with their planned Hollywood invasion, although this never materialised. Osten’s new venture was not ambitious and "Prahar" became a significant stepping stone to the director’s subsequent successes, especially "Zindagi" (1941) and some of its sequels. The film is set in Lucknow and some of the sets were made at the latter location. The film was shot between June and September 1938 under the working title of "Lucknow Manikya." The film was released nationwide on 7 December 1938. It did reasonably well at the box office, earning Rs.25,000 (approx.) in its first week after a theatrical run of 101 days. It had won several award including Film Club Award for Best Film. Prahar was a hit film as well as that year as it grossed 75,000 rupees. The film that has been praised for its excellent cinematography and rich sets by Franz Osten is a romantic-drama about a royal house of Lucknow which goes through turmoil after being invaded by an evil man. Ashok Kumar plays a prince, a royal heir to a throne who loses his love to the criminal masquerading as royalty. The story unfolds over several years and follows the prince's quest for revenge against the usurper who marries his former flame. In sense the film is based on the Ancient Greek legend or play "The Children of Edipus". Ashok Kumar removed his trademark song with Devika Rani in the opening credits in order to show that he was not in the film for just glamour. He didn't do "his song with Devika" because he wanted to prove through this film that he could act. However, die-hard fans of Ashok Kumar's love songs were disappointed with the omission of his songs and started writing protests against him to Franz Osten. They began to realize their error when they saw the impact of the film praising Ashok kumar's acting. Ashok Kumar also refused any kind of publicity for this film like personal appearances, interviews etc., even though it was one of his biggest successes. This was a rarity in the days of the Indian film industry when stars were wont to do personal appearances and give interviews. He also refused to sign a new contract with Franz Osten. He maintained that there was nobody else who could direct him as well as Franz Osten. The director Franz Osten admitted that he couldn't make a film without Ashok Kumar even though it would be regrettable for him as well as for his own career. After much negotiating, Ashok kumar came back on terms that he would work with Franz Osten after four years from 1938.
